Life has been busy for HMTers despite there being no
company shows on at
present. David Clapham directed "John Drum's Entertainment"
at the ANU Arts
Centre for Papermoon and it featured Dan Jobson, Jerry Hearn and Stu Roberts
in pretty unforgettable roles (and clothes). Jonathan Thomsen, Carly Jacobs
and Fiona Atkin were on stage at the same time over at The Street Theatre
in
various states of undress in NUTS' "Pavlov - 2 Seconds Before The
Crime" and
all gave electric performances.
Finishing his trilogy, GH came off "Misery"
and "Big" to guest-star (his
first cameo) in The Street Theatre's Professional Group's Chekhov Laboratory
playing the title role in a movement-based interpretation of "Ivanov"
by the
intriguing Catherine Langman. Also on the same bill, Iain Sinclair directed
scenes from "Uncle Vanya" before disappearing OS on his Churchill
Scholarship. (We're hoping he'll be back in time for a third round of
"Harry's" at Christmas. Oliver Baudert, soon to appear in HMT's
"Welcome to
the Machine" and "Dealer's Choice" for HMT, gave a sensational
performance
under Iain's guidance in "Uncle Vanya".
The omnipresent Duncan Driver played a collection of
roles (Ah to be Shaw,
to be Shaw) in Rep's highly successful "Gross Indecency". We're
looking
forward to seeing his directional debut at Radford of "One Flew over
the
Cuckoo's Nest" in October. Liz Bradley returned to the floorboards
(or was
driven there after directing "Misery") to star in Papermoon's
epic "The
Night of the Iguana". Also, Ben Hamey appeared with Robert Stackian
sophistication in the recent Bohemian happening for Canberra Youth Theatre's
"Zapt 6" - and don't miss him presenting Monday nights on artSOUND.
Also at
Gorman House, all of the HMT dancing boys (Dean, Jake, James and Daniel)
are
preparing to go "Out of Bounds" with Quantum Leap late in July.
Matt Frawley and Gerald Jones are to be congratulated
on a fine show with
Philo's "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" - and both are on-board
to help
with the decor for "Welcome to the machine". Lastly, we farewell
Patrick
Oxley as he leaves with his family to Brisbane. His au revior performance
as
Snoopy in "Charlie Brown" made us howl at the moon in sadness
as Canberra
loses one of its finest vocal talents.
If you missed "The Masters of Space & Time"
at The Street Theatre in early April then you missed one of the freshest,
funniest and fervent pieces of theatre seen in the Canberra Cosmos in
recent memory. If you missed Ian Sinclair's masterful direction of Kenneth
Lonergan's "This Is Our Youth" then you missed one of the most
sizzling, sensational and seething plays of our generation. Don't let
it happen thrice now - catch "Big, The Musical" at Radford College
on May 8 9 10 at 7.30pm in the TB Millar Hall where the time/space continuum
will again be artistically disrupted, challenged and twisted like a ponytail.
Call us on 61 62 62 39 for a ticket back to yer childhood.
Don't miss Dean Cross and Jake River Fraser
dancing their tired but tough little feet in the Choreographic Centre's
"Hot to Trot" extravaganza, 6.00pm, December 1 at Gorman House.
Also, Sally Bradford shows us she's not just a pretty techie when she
appears onstage as a Dromio in Radford College Year 10's cartoony interpretation
of "The Comedy of Errors" on December 3 & 4, in The LJ Willett
Performing Arts Building. Although it's far too late, we also hope you
didn't miss Daramalan College's "Cathedral Song" at The Street.
Our dear stalwart, Ben Waters was the assistant Director to the dear,
dark Director of Danger, Joe Woodward. Also on the belated list was "Pravda"
at the ANU which featured Fee Atkin, David Clapham, Pat Collins and Jonathan
Thomsen.
Meanwhile, Iain Sinclair has amiably and ably directed
Canberra Youth Theatre's "Shakespeare a la Carte", to be seen
in the Western Courtyard of Gorman House Arts Centre, December 11 - 21...
while preparing for another round of "Harry's Christmas" at
The Street on December 22 & 23. Also, Bronwyn Grannall is appearing
in the Players Company's "Fawlty Towers" every weekend up until
December 14, while Robert De Fries is showing The Things We Do For Love
at Canberra Repertory also up until December 14. And lastly, yes, there
is truth to the rumour that a sequence of "damage" will be performed
at the CAT Awards, at the Playhouse, December 14. That seems to be the
date of all dates: December 14. Any awards given for Human Rights will
be picked up by our new HMT CEO, Duncan Driver.
There's a bit of theatrical activity this week with
Ben Hamey, Max Gambale, Dan Jobson, Sophie Garner and twin - a very snowy
Jordan Prosser - appearing at Radford's TB Millar Hall in Twelfth
Night by a new up and coming English playwright. Meanwhile Jake
Fraser will appear in a Dean Cross-pollinated Quantum piece entitled Chaos
in the Courtyard at Gorman House. Both pieces run from Thursday
to Saturday at 7.30pm. Meanwhile Duncan Driver is still learning
to drive older patrons away from Theatre 3 in its last week.
And book your tickets for damage, opening Friday 25 right
now - before the fires smoulder along Scrivener...
Our very own multi-skilled Carly Jacobs is simply Anybody's
in Philo's West Side Story, playing another muscular
musical broad. Catch her dancing the new pit's perilous precipice at Erindale
Theatre between 12-28 Sep. Bookings 6257-1077. Meanwhile a resurrected
Iain Sinclair will direct HMT newcomer and appropriately-named Duncan
Driver in Paula Vogel's very un-Replike How I learned to Drive
which will be giving the grannies heart failure at Theatre between September
27-October 19. Bookings for L-Plates on 6257 1950.
Stuart, Steph, Nicky J, Gina, Ben, Dan, PJ and many
many other gorgeous HMT lovers can be seen killing and raping in Bohemian's
no-frills-much-thrills blood-red, riotous hit Titus Andronicus
from the 4-21 Sep Wed-Sat 8pm over in the Courtyard Studio. Miss it and
be slain. Bookings 6257-1077.
The one and only HMT guru and font of all-theatrical knowledge, Jerry Hearn,
will display his craft with precision and panache as he appears under HMT's
other one and only guruess and fontine of all-theatrical knowledge, Liz
Bradley('s) direction in the Players' Company's What the Butler Saw
by Joe Orton. It opens Friday 23rd at the UC Hub. Both these two have seen
a lot of things as well... I imagine the rehearsal room is littered with
expletive residue.
Catch Bronwyn Grannall in FreeRain's Hotel Sorrento, presently at
the Courtyard Studio, Wednesdays to Saturdays until the 24 August. She's
a little more gentle than when you'll next see her in Misery for
HMT, March 2003.
Claire Bocking and Rob DeFries have appeared
in A Bunch of Fives at the Street Theatre, a great initiative every
second Friday of the month. Try to get out and see some actors survive
for five on a set topic like undies and addiction.
