About the "club president"

As a kid, George Huitker played representative baseball and tennis without having a parent on either junior sport’s governing boards. He also attempted little athletics, cricket, indoor soccer, judo, jujitsu, netball, soccer, softball and touch football - but an impetuous nature meant a failure in most of these sporting experiments. He has coached soccer - the sport that he has persisted with - for over fifteen years. In 2002 he began his representative coaching career for ACT Futsal and he is now won over by the beauty of this terrific indoor game except for those rare instances when brawn wins over brain.

Huitker is often seen in attendance at Presentation Nights for soccer, theatre and poetry - three hobbies which also happen to be intrinsically linked to his job as a school teacher at Radford College, Canberra, where he has taught Drama (and even English) and quite dramatically coached indoor and outdoor football (and even softball) at various times since 1989.

He has formed various theatre companies over the years, finally settling with his own independent theatre company, Huitker Movement Theatre (HMT) in 2002. HMT received funding from artsACT for its inaugural season and has since gone on to win many local industry awards for its productions which regularly attract quality directors, actors and discerning audiences. His 2001 memoir Not Just Footy, published by Ginninderra Press, was adapted for the stage in 2004 by HMT under the watchful eye of Canadian director Walter Learning and played to packed houses. He has also published a collected work of poetry entitled An Unfamiliar Actor (2002) also with Ginninderra Press.

In 2004 he taught far too many classes, coached far too many teams and involved himself in far too many theatrical ventures and as a result had really cranky days. He can often be found listening to ambient CDs, flipping through The Art of Living, sipping jasmine teas and enthusiastically singing “If You’re Happy and You Know It” with Radford’s Middle Schoolers. In 2004 he resurrected his touch football playing days by joining The Power, an all-ages sporting collective which aims to entertain.
